Why did OpenAI pause development of ChatGPT’s erotic mode?

OpenAI halted the development of an "erotic mode" for ChatGPT after criticism from watchdog groups and employees. The feature faced delays following internal debates and has no set release date. This pause is part of a broader shift to prioritize business-focused AI tools.

  • Summary: OpenAI stopped work on ChatGPT’s adult mode due to concerns raised internally and externally, with no timeline for launch.
  • Why it matters: The pause reflects OpenAI’s strategic shift toward business and developer users amid competition and criticism.
  • Key point: The erotic mode is one of several deprioritized projects as OpenAI refocuses its AI development efforts.

OpenAI Pauses Development of ChatGPT’s Erotic Feature

The proposed “adult mode” was first mentioned by CEO Sam Altman in October. Since then, the project has been the subject of much debate. In January, reports surfaced of an intense discussion between company leadership and the advisory board, where one advisor warned that OpenAI could be developing a “sexy suicide coach.” This led to multiple delays in the feature’s launch. According to the Financial Times, the erotic feature currently has no timeline for release. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the company has nothing further to add.

The adult mode is just the latest project OpenAI has deprioritized. Earlier this week, it was also revealed that the company will deprioritize Instant Checkout, a ChatGPT feature intended to turn the chatbot into a purchasing portal. Additionally, Sora, an AI video generator, was shut down following criticism that it contributed to a flood of low-quality content online. These changes come after the Wall Street Journal reported a “major strategic shift” at OpenAI, with the company aiming to focus more on business users and developers. Pressure from competitor Anthropic, which has launched several coding and business tools, may also have influenced this decision.

What This Means for the U.S. Market

AIny brief analysis: OpenAI’s decision to pause development of the erotic mode could allow for greater focus on business-oriented tools. This shift may strengthen the company’s position in the competitive AI landscape, especially amid rising pressure from rivals like Anthropic. For U.S. developers and enterprises, this could translate into more accessible and relevant AI solutions tailored for professional use.
